Grace for the Next Chapter — Friendship Rarely Runs on Autopilot

The phone works in both directions. That is not a profound insight, but it can be an inconvenient one.

When work schedules change, children move, churches shift, or retirement rearranges the week, even good friendships can grow quiet. Usually there was no argument. Nobody decided the relationship was over. Two people simply kept waiting for the other one to make the first move.

Grace sometimes means putting down the scorecard. It means calling without first counting who called last, inviting someone without demanding perfect enthusiasm, or saying, “I’ve missed you,” without turning the moment into a complaint.

ONE SMALL MOVE: Contact one person you have been hoping would contact you. Keep it simple: “You crossed my mind today. How are you?”

You may not catch them at the perfect time. You may get voicemail. Make the call anyway. A friendship is often worth one small interruption.
