Hello friends,
We are good at postponing joy until the work is finished, the problem is solved, or the list is finally empty. The trouble is, the list rarely stays empty for long.
That is the heart of today’s reflection, “Joy Does Not Need to Be Earned.” A shared laugh, a favorite song, a good cup of coffee, or a few quiet minutes outside may seem small. But small gifts are still gifts.
I don’t believe God asks us to prove our worth by staying tired. Grace reminds us that life is more than what we accomplish. Receiving a moment of joy does not mean we have stopped caring about our responsibilities. It means we are awake enough to notice that God’s goodness can meet us in the middle of an ordinary day.
This week’s step: Choose one simple thing you enjoy and give it your full attention for ten minutes. Don’t multitask. Don’t try to make it productive. Just receive it with gratitude.
If quiet days sometimes leave you wondering whether you are still useful, this week’s video may speak to you: Why Quiet Days in Retirement Can Feel Wrong | Finding Purpose After Work.
If this reflection connected with you, I’d be glad to hear what simple joy you chose. You can reply to this email, or pass it along to someone who may need permission to breathe today.
Grace and peace,
Patrick
